How to Set Up a MOLLE System: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

How Do You Set Up a MOLLE System?

To set up a MOLLE system, weave each pouch's attachment straps alternately through the webbing on your gear and the webbing on the pouch itself, then snap the strap shut — the alternating weave is what locks the pouch in place. Plan your layout before weaving: magazines on your strong side front, medical kit accessible to both hands, and heavy items close to your body's centerline.

Here's the complete process, from understanding the grid to a field-ready layout.

What Is MOLLE?

MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is the standardized attachment system used on virtually all modern tactical gear. It consists of horizontal rows of 1-inch nylon webbing spaced 1 inch apart (called PALS — Pouch Attachment Ladder System). Any MOLLE-compatible pouch can attach to any MOLLE surface: plate carriers, chest rigs, belts, backpacks and vehicle panels.

Why it matters: one standard means your gear is modular and future-proof. A pouch you buy today fits every platform you'll own.

Step-by-Step: Attaching a MOLLE Pouch

Step 1: Plan the Position

Before weaving anything, hold the pouch against the gear and check:

  • Can you reach it with your working hand?
  • Does it block your draw stroke, reload motion or other pouches?
  • Is the weight balanced left-to-right?

Step 2: Start the Weave

Open the pouch's attachment straps (usually snap-button or tuck-tab). Thread the strap through the first row of webbing on the gear — from behind, coming toward you.

Step 3: Alternate Rows

This is the step everyone gets wrong:

  1. Strap through gear webbing row 1
  2. Strap through pouch webbing row 1
  3. Strap through gear webbing row 2
  4. Strap through pouch row 2
  5. Continue until the strap ends

The alternating pattern creates friction locks at every row. Skipping the alternation (running the strap straight down one surface) is why pouches sag and flop.

Step 4: Lock It Down

Snap the button or tuck the tab. Then pull the pouch hard in every direction — it should feel like part of the platform, not an accessory hanging off it.

Recommended Layouts by Platform

Plate Carrier (Front)

| Position | Pouch | Reason | |----------|-------|--------| | Strong-side front | 2–3 magazine pouches | Fastest reload access | | Weak-side front | Admin/utility pouch | Non-critical items | | Weak-side cummerbund | IFAK (medical) | Reachable by both hands | | Back panel | Hydration / radio | Keeps front profile flat |

Battle Belt

Keep it light: 1–2 mag pouches, holster, IFAK, dump pouch. A belt overloaded past 8 lbs will sag regardless of quality.

Backpack

Exterior MOLLE is for bulky, occasionally-needed items: bedroll, tripod, trauma kit. Frequently used items go inside or on your person.

Common MOLLE Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping rows in the weave — the #1 cause of floppy pouches
  • Mounting pouches upside down — contents fall out when opened
  • Covering your entire front — you can't go prone with a wall of pouches
  • Ignoring weight balance — a 2-lb pouch on one side torques your spine over a long day
  • No dummy-cord on critical gear — weave doesn't retain loose items; tether what you can't lose

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MOLLE the same as PALS? Not exactly: PALS is the webbing grid itself (the ladder of 1" straps); MOLLE is the overall system that uses PALS for attachment. In practice the terms are used interchangeably.

Are all MOLLE pouches compatible with all MOLLE gear? Yes — that's the point of the standard. Any MOLLE/PALS pouch attaches to any MOLLE/PALS surface. Laser-cut MOLLE slots work identically to sewn webbing.

What is laser-cut MOLLE? Instead of sewn-on webbing straps, slots are cut directly into laminated fabric. It's lighter, absorbs no water and lies flatter — the modern standard on quality carriers.

How tight should MOLLE pouches be? Tight enough that a loaded pouch doesn't move when you shake the platform vigorously. If it shifts, re-weave with the alternating pattern and pull each pass snug.
