What Is CORDURA Fabric?
CORDURA is a brand of high-tenacity nylon fabric known for exceptional abrasion and tear resistance — it's the material behind virtually all professional-grade tactical gear, backpacks and military equipment. Genuine CORDURA is made from air-textured nylon 6,6 yarns and must pass the manufacturer's durability certification; the label is licensed, not generic.
If you're buying gear that needs to survive years of field abuse, the fabric spec is the first thing to check. Here's how to read it.
What Does the "D" Rating Mean?
The number — 500D, 1000D — is the denier: the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of the yarn. Higher denier = thicker yarn = heavier, more abrasion-resistant fabric.
| Fabric | Weight Feel | Abrasion Resistance | Best For | |--------|------------|---------------------|----------| | 1000D CORDURA nylon | Heavy, stiff | Maximum | Duty gear, high-wear panels | | 500D CORDURA nylon | Medium, supple | Excellent (~90% of 1000D) | Modern standard: carriers, packs | | 600D polyester | Medium | Good | Airsoft, training, budget gear | | 210D–420D nylon | Light | Moderate | Liners, packable bags, dry sacks |
Key insight: 500D delivers nearly the durability of 1000D at roughly 30% less weight — which is why professional carriers and packs have largely moved to 500D. 1000D still rules for bottom panels, drag areas and anything dragged over concrete.
CORDURA Nylon vs. Generic Polyester
Not all "tactical nylon" is equal:
- Genuine CORDURA (nylon 6,6): superior abrasion resistance, better UV stability, doesn't melt as easily. Look for the CORDURA brand tag.
- Generic nylon (600D/900D/1680D): decent but untraceable quality; denier claims are often inflated.
- Polyester (600D): cheaper, holds color well, but abrades and melts faster than nylon. Fine for airsoft and light use — the price difference is real and honest.
A simple field test: rub the fabric briskly against rough concrete 20 times. Quality nylon pills slightly; cheap polyester shreds or glazes.
Waterproofing and Coatings
Fabric alone isn't waterproof — coatings do that work:
- PU (polyurethane) coating — the standard; water-resistant, adds stiffness
- DWR (durable water repellent) face treatment — makes water bead and roll off
- Lamination (e.g., laser-cut MOLLE laminates) — bonds layers into a waterproof, structure-holding composite
For wet environments, look for PU-coated + DWR-treated fabric, and taped or bartacked seams. Note: "water-resistant" gear still leaks through zippers and stitch holes in sustained rain — that's normal.
How to Spot Quality Construction
Fabric is half the story. When evaluating any tactical product, check:
- Stitching — bartacks (dense zigzag clusters) at every stress point: strap roots, handle bases, MOLLE row ends
- Thread — bonded nylon thread, consistent stitch length, no loose ends
- Webbing — mil-spec 1" nylon webbing with clean, hot-cut edges (no fraying)
- Hardware — branded buckles (UTX, ITW, Duraflex) beat unmarked clones
- Zippers — YKK or SBS; reverse-coil for water resistance
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1000D better than 500D? Not "better" — heavier and stiffer. 1000D wins on pure abrasion resistance; 500D wins on weight and drape while retaining ~90% of the durability. Professional gear increasingly uses 500D for the body with 1000D reinforcement at wear points.
Is CORDURA waterproof? The fabric itself is not; the PU coating and DWR treatment on it provide water resistance. Fully waterproof gear needs seam sealing and waterproof closures.
How long does CORDURA gear last? Genuine 500D/1000D CORDURA gear in professional daily use typically lasts 5–10+ years; in recreational use, effectively decades. Stitching and zippers fail long before the fabric does.
Does denier affect colorfastness? No — but fiber type does. Solution-dyed nylon and quality polyester both hold color well; cheap piece-dyed fabrics fade in UV within a season. Desert and ranger-green shades show fading first.
